Assembly candidate Barbara Sprenger calls for student loan support in return for public service

January 30, 2008 – Barbara Sprenger, candidate for California’s 27th Assembly District, today called for education reform that will reimburse students for a year of college loan payments in return for a year of working in the public or non-profit sector in an underserved area.

“Almost 60% of new jobs in California require the skill set attained with a bachelor’s degree,” Sprenger said. “For every dollar we invest into affordable education, we see five, sometimes 10 dollars back in the state economy. In business we call that a no-brainer. For education, it’s a moral imperative.”

Sprenger spent eight years as an elected trustee on the San Lorenzo Valley School Board. At the end of her last term in 2006, the district budget was stable, test scores were among the highest in the county, staff and board relationships were strong and almost all of the district's schools had been honored by the state as “Distinguished Schools.”

Sprenger's proposal, the Invest in California Affordable Education Program, will waive up to $7,500 of student loans in return for a commitment to spend one year working in an underserved area as a teacher or fire fighter, nurse or police officer, social worker or doctor.

“We’ve seen similar models work with AmeriCorps, Teach for America and the National Health Service Corps, among others,” she said. “These programs work because investments in education pay off.”
